Modern day employees prefer more
free and flexible working hours which is derived from them trying to be independent
as well as motive to seek to balance work life with personal life. According to
De Bruin and Dupus (2004), managing of an employee’s work life balance is an
issue that has spanned over 20 years and studies have found measurable changes
that directly impact on it. In the present jobs have become more complex and
employees are subjected to untold pressure to meet both demand and quality standards.

Another study according to D.B. Dhas and P. Karthikeyan
(2015) states that the three factors of global competition, personal
lives/family values and an aging workforce present challenges that exacerbate
work/life balance. The study further went on to elaborate that work/life
balance initiatives are not only a US phenomenon but global employees also want
flexibility and control over their work and personal lives. According to it, in
the recent years personal and family lives have become critical values to most
Indian workforce and they are less willing to put on hold or ignore them for
the sake of work. This trend has now been merged to the Western American
culture as well, where people have change course from being willing to spend every
working hour to learning to manage complexities of modern living.
In Pasrasuraman and Greenhaus (2002) study, it was documented
that segments of the workforce may be subjected to unique work or family
pressure, and have few support from the employer in balancing them. Therefore,
presenting a major gap in the employer understanding of these individual’s
needs and wants. Therefore modern day business need to focus more on work life
balancing of employees, and create an organizational culture and job descriptions (Parasuraman
& Greenhaus, 2002) that better fit the needs of employees.
