Trade unions in the past had much
control over organizations, by controlling working hours and overtime pay rates
of employees. But with the advancement in technologies, due to these
limitations as well as others, companies decided to outsource costly
manufacturing activities to developing countries. Therefore, impact of trade
unions in modern day world is increasing becoming ineffective.
Trade Unions Loss in Ground
Due to focus only on general
issues and not in individualized issues, as well as neglecting the poor, trade
unions have lost ground in terms moral of employees to join. Also corporations
have taken advantage of loss of trade unions in political background, by
capitalizing on the importance of employing non-unionized employees to control
or govern over both unionized and non-unionized employees.
Reluctance of Members
According to Dixon (2017) number
of wage and salaried workers belonging to unions have dropped from about 20
percent in 1983 to 11 percent in 2014. She has summarized that it is mainly due
to employees seeing better opportunities with engaging with management rather
than with unions. Most employees nowadays are seeking flexible working hours and
better pays, both of which cannot be provided by unions. Whereas unions see a
ceiling for pay or wages, direct dealings with management brings about better
pays. Also modern reward compensation schemes discourage this further.
