In any organization before the recruitment stage starts, the initial phase is the designing of the job. This includes defining the job, nature of the work and analyzing the requirements for a potential candidate. Yet even though it seems routine, with the change of times many new issues have arisen, which are discussed below.

Telecommuting

With the advent of internet and related technologies, the work at home concept is becoming extremely popular, with more and more individuals seeking and preferring to work at home. This brings about a change in the relation between employer and employee relationship, where employer doesn’t get to monitor the employee on a full time basis, or as he or she wishes. Therefore, HR personnel are faced with the difficulty of creating telecommuting jobs and ensuring that the person who is telecommuting, works in a responsible, diligent and ethical manner, all the while ensuring company obligations (including Corporate Social Responsibility) are met.

Alternative Work Patterns

With the passing of the 90s, people nowadays are seeking jobs which ensure leisure. Also promoting this fact, is new organizations readily trying to provide free time and leisure to employees in order to promote their creativity and edge at working. Therefore, at present working in shift basis is more common than before, with two or more people sharing the responsibility of jobs at fixed time intervals. Therefore, the need to consider and accumulate this in the stages of job design has become crucial to ensure smooth work flow.

Business Process Re-engineering

In order to stay ahead of competitors, organizations benchmark certain processes or products, and then re-engineer their processes (backwards) to meet that certain benchmark. This creates the need for previously described jobs to be re-defined, which may cause resistance from job holder.
